This section is intended to help primary students (k-5) get started with the research process.  Middle and High School students will want to check out the resources at the left navigation bar for those grade levels and links at the TNT Research & Reference Web.

Reference Search:  Know PlayHere's a "one-stop" information shop.   Choose the type of information you are looking for and enter your search term in the appropriate box.  Use the "pull-down" menues to choose your resources.  Check this out - pretty kewl research tool!

Almanacs

  1. 50 States. Discover interesting facts and figures about each of the 50 states.
  2. Factmonster Almanac. This is a "kid friendly" site with categories including people, world, sports, math, science, word wise and much more. Excellent site!
  3. Farmers Almanac. Want to know what the weather will be like a few months or even years from now? Check the Farmers Almanac to find out!
  4. Guinness World Records. An almanac containing thousands of world records all in one place!
  5. Information Please Almanac. An almanac containing information on people, sports, entertainment, science, history, etc.
  6. Kid's Almanac. Yahoo! has rendered a more kid user-friendly version of the popular Information Please Kids' Almanac.
  7. Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids.  One of America’s oldest almanacs now has a version for kids. Find information on weather, history, animals, and more!
  8. Stately Knowledge. Get the facts and figures on each of the 50 states including state symbols, nicknames, flags, points of interest and much more.
  9. World Almanac for Kids. This “kid friendly” site, created by World Almanac, contains information on weather, animals, inventions, landforms, and more.

Atlases

  1. Altapedia. Altapedia online contains full color maps as well as key statistics on countries of the world
  2. Ask Asia Map and Timeline Library.  Many links for Asian counties, all maps are of good quality
  3. Autopilot.  Check it out!  You get travel maps on demand.
  4. Blank Outline State Maps. These blank maps allow space for you to fill in important information such as landforms, state capitals and more.
  5. Color Landform Atlas of the U.S. Shows relief maps, county maps, satellite photos and even an historical map for each state!
  6. Earthshots.  This site presents satellite images of changes over the last 20 years.
  7. Electronic Map Library.  There are a limited number of atlases, but they are excellent.
  8. Google Maps.  Enter an address and find a map or even street view.
  9. Historical Map Web Sites.  Many links to early maps, organized by world region.
  10. Infoplease Atlas. Contains maps of numerous states and countries.
  11. Latitude and Longitude.  Great graphics makes learning the basics of using maps easy.
  12. Lost at Sea: The Search for Longitude.  Here's a fun interactive learning site from NOVA
  13. Map Collections: 1597-1988.  From the extensive collection of the Library of Congress.
  14. MapQuest.  Free online travel maps and more.
  15. Maps.  First choose the continent, and then choose the country and download information and a map.
  16. Maps and References.  The University of Iowa must have every good map on the net listed here.
  17. Maps of Europe.  The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection.
  18. Maps:  What You Need to Know.  Review scale, distance, contour and more.
  19. Mathematics of Cartography  Learn about map making and try it youself.
  20. National Geographic Maps.. Search for places and print customized maps.
  21. Ouline Maps.  These maps may be printed and copied for personal or classroom use
  22. Terry Fly.  Put in any address and look down and "fly" over the area getting an excellent Arial view.
  23. United Nations Cartographic Section.  Great maps,  require Adobe Acrobat to see or print.
  24. United States Maps  Big collection, more than 700 are here.
  25. Visible Earth.  Directory of images, and animations presented by NASA.
  26. World Atlas & Map Library .  By Fact Monster, Click on a region below for a more detailed map, or try the map index.

Dictionaries & Thesauruses

  1. American Sign Language Browser. Click on a word to see its sign.
  2. Biographical Dictionary.  This dictionary covers more than 28,000 notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day.
  3. Dictionary of Spanish.. Translate words from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish.
  4. Definr.  An incredibly fast dictionary!
  5. Illustrated Scientific DictionariesHere is a collection of online dictionaries with pictures for many different subjects.
  6. Little Explorers Chilren's Dictionary (scroll down).  Here is an online children's dictionary - to browse, just click on the alphabet letters.  There are also picture dictionary activities - print-outs introduce young students to research on the Internet using the Little Explorers picture dictionary. Students use the on-line dictionary to look up the answers to a set of questions.
  7. Merriam-Webster Online.   Web access to the popular dictionary and thesaurus
  8. Merriam-Webster's Word Central.  Here's a version of the popular dictionary designed for kids - has interactive links and educational games.
  9. RhymeZone.  Type in a word and find its rhymes, synonyms, definitions, and more
  10. Roget's Thesaurus.   - Offers search and browse options, and access to the American Heritage Dictionary.
  11. Sign Language Dictionary.  Learn sign sign language with these animations that demonstrate the signs.
  12. Thesaurus. Click on the thesaurus or the dictionary.
  13. Travlang's Translation Dictionaries.  Travlang is proud to offer many on-line translating dictionaries!
  14. The Visual Thesaurus.  This groundbreaking application uses the power of the web to display and process information in a new way.
  15. WordNet.  A simple, easy-to-use online dictionary without any clutter.

Encyclopedias

  1. Columbia Encyclopedia.  Containing nearly 51,000 entries (marshalling six and one-half million words on a vast range of topics), and with more than 80,000 hypertext cross-references.
  2. Country Encyclopedia.  Just select a region or country from the pull-down menu and off you go!
  3. e-encyclopedia.  DK and Google bring you the best of the Web.
  4. Encarta Encyclopedia.  An online tool - encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, and homework help too.
  5. Encyclopedia Smithsonian.  The Smithsonian from A to Z.
  6. Encyclopedia:  Yahoo Kids.  A service that searches Columbia Encyclopedia for articles about lots of different topics.
  7. Fact Monster.  Great, kid-friendly almanac dictionary, encyclopedia, and homework helper.
  8. Grolier's Online.  Connect ALL students to a world of knowledge and learning.  (available only on school network)
  9. HighBeam Encyclopedia.  More than 57,000 frequently updated articles from the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
  10. Infoplease Encyclopedia.  Access more than 57,000 articles from the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition.
  11. Online Encyclopedia and Reference Guide.  By Kids Konnect, many useful links for research.

Search Engines

  1. AOL@School.  Features links for students, educators, and homework help.
  2. Ask for Kids (Formerly Ask Jeeves).  One of the original "natural language" search engines.  The butler, Jeeves, has retired but the search engine is even better.
  3. Awesome Library.  Great resources selected and monitored by librarians.
  4. CyberSleuth.  Here's an Internet search guide for K-12.
  5. Dmoz Open Directory Project for Kids.  This searchable directory features many different resources.
  6. GoGooligans.  GoGooligans is an educational search engine designed to provide kid-oriented search results.
  7. Google.  This is the industry standard - by far, the most popular search engine in the world.
  8. Kids Click.  A Web search for kids designed and maintained by librarians.
  9. KidsWeb.  Wonderful set of resources - Mid-Continent Public Library kid's directory.
  10. Quintura for Kids.  Kid friendly, includes a visual organizer to help get started.
  11. SuperKids.  This directory features icons and graphics so even young readers can use it.
  12. Surfing the Net with Kids.  This guide features the best kid sites k-12 and provides website reviews.
  13. Why Files.  Search 100's of articles about "the science behind the news" from the Univ. of Wisconsin.-Madison
  14. Yahoo Kids (Formerly Yahooligans),  Bills itself as Kids Games, Kids Movies, Kids Music, and More.
