Picture Book Podcast

Welcome to my new Picture Book Podcast - a series of book readings for children that I will share over the Web.  The books presented here are all some of my favorites.  You can find them at your local library or get them via interlibrary loan too.  They are all fun to share and read.  I hope that you will read them to someone too!

Picture books are a format - stories are told with pictures and often with words.  The pictures do not tell the whole story.  The words do not tell the full story.  The fun of a picture book is to see how a complete story is told with BOTH words and pictures.

Sharing picture books with children is important and it is never too early to start.  You can read books to babies - they love it.  You can read books to baby before birth too - they hear virtually everything that happens around mom.  Helping get a child ready-to-read, ready-for-school is important.  Sharing early literacy skills with children prepares them to become readers.

My presentations here are just meant to showcase great books - books you can share with children.  If you want to know more about early literacy skills, please see my EARLY LITERACY WEB at www.earlyliteracyweb.com.  You will find complete explanations of the 6 early literacy skills, resources to help you get started, more great book suggestions, and "tips and tricks" from a professional children's librarian.

My Picture Book Podcast represents streaming, online versions that you can download to your computer and transfer to your favorite portable media devise.  I use the common format, MP4, so you should find that any brand of media player will work (you see, podcasting is really not about iPods at all).

If this is new to you, I suggest you check out my Podcasts for Learning Web for information about this format, tutorials on how to get started, and links to almost anything you would want to know about podcasting.

Remember, podcasting is not about a format (mp3, mp4, macs, pc, whatever).  It is just a way to allow users to sign up to automatically get new podcasts in a series.  You can sign up for my Picture Book Podcast using your favorite podcatcher or you can use the podcasting features built into most of today's browsers (Internet Explorer and FireFox).

Because the format and resolution of most portable media players is not compatible with the most common media players that are installed on the vast majority of personal computers, I have 2 versions of each video:

  • The podcast file that is on the podcast feed (rss, xml file) will always be an MP4 with a resolution of 320 X 240.
  • I will also Webcast each picture book to, using this page to provide a direct link to the exact same video in a streaming Web format (FLV with a resolution of 355 X 288).

What this means is that you do not have to download any files to enjoy these picture book readings.  You can just visit this page and click on whatever readings you would like to preview.  You may choose to subscribe to my RSS podcast feed - that will provide you with an automatic notification each time I release a new video.  If you prefer, you may just check back here and "catch up" with my new releases.

I will be releasing 2 podcast episodes each month for the rest of the 2008/2009 school year.  If you have any questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you - please use my contact form.  I will try to get back to you if you like, just as soon as I can.

Webcasts:  My Favorite Picture Books

Did you know that most downloaded podcast files never make it to a portable media player (the "pod").  For many of us, being able to watch media, streaming it and viewing it on our computers is all we really need.  I will post links to each and every podcast I release - these are embedded videos (flv) files that will play on any computer that has FLASH installed.

These links will take you to a Web page at my Web Portfolio, BreitLinks, where I maintain webcasts of my videos.  These links will "pop up" in a new browser window - just watch the video files by clicking on the embedded media player's PLAY button.  Please adjust your volume with the controls on your computer (I use a simple player with as few buttons, whistles, and bells as possible!).

Please close the pop-up window when you are done viewing, returning to this page so that you can look at some of the other videos too.

April 2009

  • Where's My Teddy?  Having a routine, a set of things we do at bedtime, can help us get a good night's sleep. For many children, going to bed means huddling and cuddling their own teddy bear. Here's a fun story about a boy, a bear, and the teddy bears that they love (April 15).

  • Paddington Bear.  One of the most popular bears in the world, one of the most popular series of chapter books in the world, is Paddington. He is a bear that came to London as a stole-away from Peru. This "book-talk" video presents the main titles in the Paddington series (April 1).

March 2009

  • Bear Snores OnKarma Wilson is a popular children's book author that is increasingly getting the attention and affection of young readers. She has a wonderful, whimsical style that uses rhyme and repetition to delight children (March 15).

  • CorduroyChildren love their teddy bears! Many adults love bears too. Written by Don Freeman, the book Corduroy is one of the most popular picture books in school and public libraries. This timeless classic has entertained generations of kids and helped get them ready to read (March 1).

February 2009

  • A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr.  (February 2, 2009, 10 minutes).  Every person's life is a story. Every person's life touches others. Dr. Martin Luther King's life was productive and compassionate. Featuring a title from David Adler's award-winning biography series, I have also included a short video about Dr. King's life.

  • A Picture Book of Rosa Parks.  (February 15, 2009. 11 minutes).  David Adler biography series of picture books are great for young children. They are good books for older readers. This book, about "the mother of the civil rights movement" tells us about the life and times of Rosa Parks.
