Library Skills Podcast
Welcome
to my new Library Skills Podcast - a series of the multimedia and videos I
create for my lessons in an elementary school library. The skills
that we share are all based on
Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards for
Information and Technology Literacy.
In a digital age, it is important to be comfortable with
electronic resources and search tools. It is also important to be
able to locate and utilize traditional print resources. I try to
strike a balance and always work within the resources and facilities that
I have available.
My Library Skills Podcasts represents streaming, online
versions that you can download to your computer and transfer to your
favorite portable media devise. I use the common format, MP4, so you
should find that any brand of media player will work (you see, podcasting
is really not about iPods at all).
If this is new to you, I suggest you check out my
Podcasts for Learning Web for information about this format,
tutorials on how to get started, and links to almost anything you would
want to know about podcasting.
Remember, podcasting is not about a format (mp3, mp4, macs,
pc, whatever). It is just a way to allow users to sign up to
automatically get new podcasts in a series. You can sign up for my
Picture Book Podcast using your favorite
podcatcher or you can use the podcasting features built into most
of today's browsers (Internet Explorer and FireFox).
Because the format and resolution of most portable media
players is not compatible with the most common media players that are
installed on the vast majority of personal computers, I have 2 versions of
each video:
- The podcast file that is on the podcast feed (rss, xml
file) will always be an MP4 with a resolution of 320 X 240.
- I will also Webcast each picture book to, using this page
to provide a direct link to the exact same video in a streaming Web format
(FLV with a resolution of 355 X 288).
What this means is that you do not have to download any
files to review some of my library lessons. You can just visit this
page and click on whatever readings you would like to preview. You
may choose to subscribe to my RSS podcast feed - that will provide you
with an automatic notification each time I release a new video. If
you prefer, you may just check back here and "catch up" with my new
releases.
I will be releasing 2 podcast episodes each month for the
rest of the 2008/2009 school year. If you have any questions or comments you would like to
share, I would love to hear from you - please use my
contact form. I will try to get back
to you if you like, just as soon as I can.
[My Picture Book Podcast Feed] [Webcasts
of Picture Book Videos]
Did you know that most downloaded podcast files never make
it to a portable media player (the "pod"). For many of us, being
able to watch media, streaming it and viewing it on our computers is all
we really need. I will post links to each and every podcast I
release - these are embedded videos (flv) files that will play on any
computer that has FLASH installed.
These links will take you to a Web page at my Web
Portfolio, BreitLinks,
where I maintain webcasts of my videos. These links will "pop up" in
a new browser window - just watch the video files by clicking on the
embedded media player's PLAY button. Please adjust your volume with
the controls on your computer (I use a simple player with as few buttons,
whistles, and bells as possible!).
Please close the pop-up window when you are done viewing,
returning to this page so that you can look at some of the other videos
too.

Earth, Globes, and Maps. If you we out in space
looking at Earth, you would see an amazing, beautiful sight, a spinning
globe. You can see the large masses of land. To see the details of how
earth, you might want to look at a model of it (globe) or a diagram of
what you are seeing (map) (April 15).

Encyclopedia: Guide Words. Encyclopedias have guide
words - one set of the top of each 2 pages. The first guide word is the
first item on the first page. The second guide word is the last item on
the second page. Use alphabetical order to find the guide words that our
word would be between (April 1).

Using Encyclopedias. This is another video I was able to
quickly create using a PowerPoint format with transitions and animations.
We review the basic things we need to know to find information in
encyclopedias (March 15).
-
Dictionary Guide Words. Here are the basics that we need to
know to look up words in dictionaries. I created this for my 3rd graders.
Please note how I have simplified the process of making multimedia by
using a PowerPoint-style, narrated presentation (March 1).

Alphabetical
Order. (February 2, 2009.
5 minutes). Getting comfortable with reference books requires
students to be able to apply the process of alphabetical order. Some
things we learn to do by DOING. I always carefully practice procedures
like alphabetical order with students, but find having different ways to
explain it and multimedia really helps. This video outlines the process so
that we can practice, practice, practice until everyone is comfortable.
