Language and Reading Skills

  1. A.B.Cow   This site lets students practice the alphabet and basic keyboard skills. There are three levels of difficulty.
  2. All About Me:  Its Fun to Read.  This interactive sites helps kids create a short online story about themselves.  Audio is included, so kids can read and listen along.
  3. Alphabet Writing Pad.  Kids will love this change of pace - practice writing with a virtual pencil and piece of paper.  When finished, you can print what you did!  Not only can this be a great teaching tool for writing, but it also helps develop hand-eye coordination and mouse skills.
  4. Book Adventure:  Find a Book.  If you're not sure what book you're looking for, we can help you find a book that's right for you.
  5. Book Reviews for First Grade.  This site presents some good picture books and links for discussion topics, activities, related books and links to other subjects and resources.
  6. Bright Ideas for Writing.  Fun site - click on the links for GRADES 1-2.
  7. Characters:  Writing.  Students choose the type of clothes, hair and skin color that they want their character to have and then type on the notepad a sentence about that character.
  8. English as a Second Language:  Activities for ESL Students and Word Based Games for ESL Students.

  10. First Grade Language Arts.  Here's a formal lesson plan with 3 objectives:   1. The student will participate in an oral discussion.  2. The student will participate in a listening activity.  3. The student will complete an art activity based on the story.

  15. Grandview Library First Grade.  This is the blog for the Grandview Library Program and features some great PODCASTS on books. 
  16. It's Fun to Read Magic!  Students learn phonic skills and rhyming while creating a magician and 2 magic tricks.
  17. Kids Lab.  Links for first graders that cover vocabulary development, phonics, and reading.
  18. Learn to Read.  Children can learn to read here while playing this online phonetic game.
  19. Learn to Read at Starfall.  Primarily designed for first grade, Starfall.com is also useful for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and second grade.
  20. Library Skills Links.  From MiKids - more than 30 interactive resources to review information and technology literacy skills with children. 
  21. Mrs. Alphabet Offers New Techniques for Learning Alphabet, Phonics, Math, and Reading.  Mrs. Alphabet, Anne Lynch, is the author and creator of children's books, certificates, learning tools, and updated educational materials to assist children in early learning and successful progress in alphabet recognition, phonics, beginning reading, math, and more.  Many links on this well-organized site.
  22. Phonics Interactivities:  First and Second Grade.  Fun Webs to help kids learn phonics.
  23. Recommended Readings for First Grade Students.  Great suggestions, links are provided to authors' home pages or to character pages where available.
  24. Word Build & Bank.  Generate dozens of different words by first choosing an ending and then adding a beginning letter or blend.
  25. Word Builder.  From Harcourt School Publishers - spelling can be fun! 
  26. Word Play.  Learn vocabulary by clicking on words and listening to and watching the chosen word animate to show what the word means.
  27. Working With Words.  Links to build vocabulary and spelling skills.
  28. Write the Caption.  Each week, Scholastics posts a different picture and challenges students to write a capture to describe each picture.
  29. Writing Guide.  Watch Spinner, the Writing Spider, actually draw the letters of the alphabet. He's a good and tireless model to follow!

Math

  1. 100th Day Activities:  Here are some ideas to celebrate the first 100 days of school, including: Suggested Activities for 100th Day, 100th day of school, The 100th Day of School, and 300 Celebration Ideas
  2. Are You a Math Magician?  Great collection of interactivites for different math operations - features 2 levels to support different needs.
  3. Base 10 Counting.  Here's an activity for children who are just beginning to learn how numbers are made up. The object is to group the ones into tens to see what numbers come up. We make learning math fun for all.
  4. Comparing Numbers Activities.  Interactive site that reviews more, less, or the same. 
  5. Count Us In:  Addition With the Bus Game.  Students use addition while playing an animated game about putting kids on a school bus - great fun.
  6. Count Us In:  Subtraction at the Bowling Alley.  Bowling is fun and its a great way to learn to subtract.
  7. Count Us In:  Number Sequence.  This site has students help a frog across the pond by clicking on a set of numbers in the right order.
  8. Count Us In:  Ordinal Sequence.  Practice ordinal sequence at the carnival!
  9. Create a Graph.  Sometimes, numbers are best expressed as pictures - charts and graphs.  Here's an easy site to make them.
  10. Everyday Mathematics:  Recommended 1st Grade Books.  Here's some reading suggestions along with lesson ideas.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page for Additional 1st Grade Suggestions for Units.
  11. First Grade Lessons: Count on It! Here's some math related resources that kids will enjoy using while they learn (GPB Education).
  12. First Grade Math Index.  This is a great site, organized so that kids can easily find different topics and online resources.
  13. First Grade Math:  AAA Math.  Grade-appropriate topics and lessons to share math skills with children.

  15. K-1 Math Links.  Here's a collection of sites that support basic math skills.
  16. Learning About Money.  This site includes links for learn about coins and build a robot, AOL Jr Money Activities, and an audio lesson to learn about coins.
  17. Let's Compare.  Let's have fun counting 2 sets of coins and comparing their value, from Harcourt Publishers.
  18. Math Library:  1st Grade.  Here is a large set of links from The Math Forum.  These are great Websites for teaching and reviewing math with kids.
  19. Math Online.  A collection of links to "how to tell time and typical number skills that are taught and reinforced in the first grade.

  22. Measurement Manipulatives.  From National Library of Virtual Manipulatives, here is a set of links to help kids learn different concepts of measurements in a "hands on" way.
  23. Missing Number in a Sequence.  This site explains a simple way to find numbers that are missing from a sequence of numbers.
  24. Odd or Even.  In this interactive game, students Drag and drop the numbers into the Venn diagram.
  25. Oddball:  Not Every One is the Same.  An interactive site where kids play "one of these things is not like the other."
  26. Organize Animals by Size.  Click and drag on the animals below to move them around the page.  Rearrange to compare sizes (Big, bigger, biggest / Small smaller, smallest.)
  27. Pattern Blocks.  This interactive site by the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives encourages kids to create shapes from different shaped blocks.
  28. Pattern Blocks Exploring Fractions with Shapes.  Extending the concept of patterns with blocks, this interactive site introduces fractions.
  29. Pattern Generator.  A neat interactive site provides exploration of patterns using shapes, letters and numbers. After looking at the pieces of the pattern that are already in place, click and drag the missing pieces onto the board - adjustable for different skill levels.
  30. Patterns.  Click and drag on these birds to explore different relationships.  Create patterns and formations. Group them. Count them. Play around.
  31. Shapes and Colors.  Reviews just what it says - fun, interactive sight that includes background music - the theme from Pink Panther!
  32. Spatial Concepts:  Moveable Animals.  Click and drag on the animals below to move them around the page. 
  33. Symmetry Webquest.  This Webquest introduces students to the concept of symmetry and then provides students with many choices for other great Websites to learn more.
  34. To the Market.  Have fun practicing buying items with pretend money.
  35. Wash Line.  Students hang the clothes on the line in the correct order.  This game also reviews the concepts of odd and even.
  36. What Color is This?  Learn about colors with this fun interactive site - includes background music - The Entertainer.
  37. What Shape is This?  A review of shapes that kids will enjoy.

Telling Time

  1. A Matter of Time. Interactive quizzes on half hour, 15 minute intervals and five minute intervals, in addition to story problems.
  2. Bang on the Time. Here's the challenge - read the time in words and stop the clock when it is at the correct time.
  3. Just in Time. Here's a set of interactive links, print resources, and even lessons about telling time.
  4. Stop the Clock. Learning to tell time? Click on the Stop button then record the clock's time.
  5. Telling Time. Drag the five digital times to the correct analog clock, then press Stop the Clock to record your time (30 minute increments) (15 minute increments) and (5 minute increments).
  6. Telling Time: ESL Lab.  Listen to the time by clicking the "PLAY" link and choose the answer. Press the "Final Score" button at the bottom of the page to score your quiz.

  2. Bill Nye the Science Guy.  Here's the official Website for this popular TV series.
  3. Dinosaur Activities.  Here's a collection of fun links that help teach kids about dinosaurs (scroll down).
  4. Dress for the Weather.  This multi-media interactive sites teaches kids about weather.
  5. Elmo's World:  Weather Game.  An interactive, multi-media site from Sesame Street - Elmo needs to get dressed to go outside and play.  Students choose the weather and then clothes to dress Elmo in.
  6. KidsHealth.  A collection of articles, animations, games and resources to help kids learn more about their bodies and how to stay healthy
  7. Label the Body Part.  Select one of 5 pictures of a person and then point and click to label parts of the body.
  8. Let's Talk About Insects.  An interactive site about insects that features video and multi-media.
  9. PestWorld for Kids.  this site features information about insect Information, pest descriptions, lesson, and fun online educational games
  10. Rainforest Resources.  A collection of links from abcteach.
  11. Ranger Rick.  A magazine from the NWF for young children.
  12. Rocks for Kids.  This site is for kids of all ages who love rocks. Here you will find out stuff about rocks & minerals and where to go to find out more.
  13. Rock Hounds.  Get your hard hats on and let's go digging for some fun and facts!
  14. Science Clips: Ages 5 - 6.  Here are some animated presentation about science.
  15. Science Glossary:  First Grade.  This site presents an image illustrating the term, and correct pronunciation of the term
  16. Science Links.  This site features links for insects, animals. trees, wood & paper, fabrics, balance & motion, pebbles & sand, plants, solics & liquids, and solids & liquids.
  17. Variation.  Students select and sort different plants and animals by clicking and dragging them into one of 4 groups:  Bird, Insect, Mammal, Plants.
  18. Weather Journal.  This site is designed to let students use a computer to record the weather with an interactive journal.
  19. Web Weather for Kids.  Learn what makes weather wet and wild, do cool activities, and become hot at forecasting the weather.
  20. Worm World.  Learn about worms from "The Yuckiest Site on the Internet."
  21. Your Amazing Body:  Featuring Ernie & Bert.  This game from Sesame Street introduces kids to how their bodies work.

Social Studies

  1. Constitution for Kids.  The law is the set of rules that we live by. The Constitution is the highest law.
